A Shout of Faith

“And when you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him” (Joshua 6:5).

A shout of steadfast faith is in direct contrast to the moans of wavering faith, and to the groans of a discouraged heart. Among the many “secrets of the Lord,” I do not know of any that is more valuable than the secret of this shout of faith. The Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have given into thine hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valour.” He did not say, “I will give,” but “I have given.”  God had decreed that the city belonged to them beforehand. Finally the day had arrived for them to stake claim to it. But the great question was, how? It looked impossible, but the Lord declared His plan long before they arrived on the scene.

Some believers and non-believers will not allow themselves to accept the possibility that a single shout caused the walls of Jericho to fall. However, the secret of their victory lay in this shout, it was not an ordinary shout but a shout of faith. A shout of faith which dared, on the authority of God‘s Word alone, to claim a promised victory, while as yet there were no visible signs of victory. And empty shout will do nothing, a faith filled shout committed to the belief that God’s word will not return to Him void makes the walls to fall.

“God has dealt to every man the measure of faith” (Roman 12:3). On our journey through life we shall meet many walls and as we approach the walls we must decide if we are going to beat our heads against them or shout with faith and let God remove them. God has declared that He has given you the city, and faith, not intelligent understanding, says you must believe this to be true. Strong faith and great faith are mighty weapons in the hands of a saint that has deliberately committed all to God when he or she can see no other way to remove the walls.

Faith is not a pathetic sentiment, but a robust and vigorous confidence built on the fact that God cannot fail, “God is not a man, that He may lie.” You cannot see Him just now, you cannot understand what He is doing or how is He is going to do it, but you know and believe Him. Faith is the heroic act of shouting before God acts and rejoicing afterwards. Faith enables you to react correctly to the walls and troubles of life. A shout of faith honors the Lord and the Lord honors your faith.

“By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days.” Faith overwhelms the mighty, tears down strongholds and gives courage to the courage less. Faith can never reach its full potential until the believer is willing to shout with a great shout; “walls be ye removed.” Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace, comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work. Amen.
